Perth toy company Connetix wins 2022 Australian best STEAM toy award, beating Lego and Mattel

The chances are if you have kids, you have probably heard of Connetix toys.

The magnetic tiles have taken over the child play world and rightfully so — who wouldn’t enjoy spending hours creating endless designs that make you feel like a building mastermind?

Now Attadale toy creators Brea Brand and Dave Alexander have added an extra special accolade to their growing resume of honours, beating out Lego and Mattel for the title of the best Educational/STEAM toy of the year at the Australian Toy Awards.

“It was pretty huge for us to take out that award against all the big toy companies; we were stoked,” Ms Brand said.

“I think we really knew we were on to something when we saw our kids playing with our brand and they could build bigger and taller things because the magnets are stronger, and then we took them into the school and all the kids loved them. It was a great feeling.”

The magnetic tiles have a unique bevel design, stronger magnets and they’re all ultrasonically welded and riveted for safety and are non-toxic.

STEAM toys are educational games and learning products that can kickstart a child’s development and help with memory retention, reading skills, hand-eye coordination and math skills.

Connetix magnetic tiles enable children to build 2D and 3D shapes either with just the tiles or additional add-on packs, such as ball runs, to create endless designs.

The friend-and-parent duo came up with the idea of Connetix tiles while they chatted at their kids’ school gates one afternoon just more than three years ago.

“My background is teaching. I’m a primary school teacher and I’ve got a business degree in marketing too, then when I had my kids home when I was on maternity leave I was doing a bit of an Instagram thing as well. So Dave knew I had a bit of a social media knowledge and following,” Ms Brand said.

Mr Alexander then came up with the idea to sell something to Ms Brand’s Instagram following as a side gig which has now turned into their full-time gig.

“I‘ve got a finance and engineering background and I’ve got a mortgage broking business and was selling stuff on Amazon, and I just thought this could be fun,” he said.

“Now the mortgage broking business is a side gig and this is what we do.”

Connetix Ball Run toys are a huge success with the kids.

Since launching almost two years ago, Connetix has amassed more than 246,000 followers on Instagram, where they show their audience fun and crazy creations to make with their tiles such as a pinball machine, sailboats, ball runs and even a spinning Ferris wheel.

“The magnetic tiles have a unique bevel design, stronger magnets and they’re all ultrasonically welded and riveted for safety and are non-toxic,” Ms Brand said.

“Then we have a bull run and some other products and cars and things with rubber wheels that complement the tiles and kind of expand the play, especially for older kids.

“Actually I think dads love the ball runs more than the kids.”

Connetix range from $35 to $320 and is available across Australia at more than 300 retailers. They have also taken on the global market and are now sold in 59 countries.

Margot Robbie as Barbie FIRST LOOK: Actress transforms into the iconic Mattel doll onset

Margot Robbie has been pictured for the first time dressed in character as Barbie, filming the hotly-anticipated live-action movie in Los Angeles, California.

The 31-year-old Australian actress was seen leaving her trailer dressed up to the nines as the fashion doll in a pair of hot pink flared trousers and matching halter waistcoat, with her long blonde hair flowing past her shoulders.

Clutching an iced coffee in the sweltering LA heat, Margot then grabbed hold of a matching pink embroidered handbag as she headed to film a scene for the project that’s being helmed by indie filmmaker Greta Gerwig.

In a move that Barbie would surely be proud of, the Wolf of Wall Street star was spotted checking her manicure as she sashayed towards the set, shielded from the sun by a black umbrella.

Sadly there was no pink corvette waiting for the star as she was later seen being driven away in a black SUV.

Ryan Gosling, who is playing Barbie’s counterpart Ken, has yet to be pictured on set, though a publicity still of him in character was unveiled last week to much fanfare on social media.

The 41-year-old Half Nelson star was compared to the likes of Freddie Prinze Jr. and H from Steps.

Little Women and Ladybird filmmaker Gerwig, 38, is directing the project, and wrote the script for the film with her longtime partner Noah Baumbach.

The film features an all-star cast including Will Ferrell, Issa Rae, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, America Ferrera, Michael Cera, and Alexandra Shipp.

A synopsis on IMDB of the upcoming film reads: ‘A doll living in “Barbieland” is expelled for not being perfect enough and sets off on an adventure in the real world. A Live-action feature film based on the popular line of Barbie toys.’

Margot has been long slated to play the world’s most iconic fashion doll in a live-action movie and back in December 2020, she vowed to give audiences ‘something totally different.’

Opting for something ‘a little left center,’ when it comes to her portrayal of the Mattel doll, the project will be produced by her LuckyChap Entertainment Company whose motto is, ‘If it’s not a f**k, yes, it’s a no.’

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about the project Robbie said: ‘Something like Barbie where the IP, the name itself, people immediately have an idea of, “Oh Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is.”

‘But our goal is to be like, “Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different – the thing you didn’t know you wanted.”‘

However, it wasn’t always Margot who was going to be playing the plastic part.

All the way back in 2016, it had originally been announced that Amy Schumer would be taking on the role – but she bowed out just four months later.

‘Sadly, I’m no longer able to commit to Barbie due to scheduling conflicts,’ she said at the time. ‘The film has so much promise, and Sony and Mattel have been great partners. I’m bummed but look forward to seeing Barbie on the big screen.’

However, later Schumer admitted that it was less about scheduling and more about creative differences. ‘They definitely didn’t want to do it the way I wanted to do it, the only way I was interested in doing it,’ she told The Hollywood Reporter.

‘The idea that that’s just what every woman must want, right there, I should have gone, ‘You’ve got the wrong gal,'” she added.

Meanwhile, onset, it was not immediately clear which outfit Margot was channeling, though pink is one of the most popular colors the doll is known for being styled in.

However, it appears as though Ryan was dressed as the ‘Earring Magic Ken’ version of the doll introduced by Mattel in 1993, as a companion to its ‘Earring Magic Barbie’ figure – in his first publicity still released last week.

This particular version of the Ken doll featured an updated look with the character sporting blonde highlights, instead of his traditional brown hair.

The doll also featured a lavender mesh shirt, a purple leather jacket and jewelry including an earring and a necklace.

Double take: Ryan, 41, is the spitting image of the beloved Mattel doll

Upon release, it became the highest-selling Ken doll in history and caused a stir when some people speculated that designers had taken inspiration from the gay clubbing scene in early nineties New York and Los Angeles.

Ryan is known for his serious acting work in acclaimed films such as Drive, Blade Runner 2049, Blue Valentine, and Half Nelson.

Sporting a cheesy grin and white underwear branded with his character’s name, the role of Ken certainly appears to be somewhat of a left turn for the thespian.

The live-action Barbie flick is set for release on July 21, 2023.

Mattel Names Disney’s Josh Silverman as Chief Franchise Officer

Josh Silverman has been named chief franchise officer and global head of consumer products at iconic toymaker Mattel.

Silverman will oversee global consumer products licensing, franchise management, retail development, publishing and live experiences. Reporting to Mattel President and COO Richard Dickson, he joins from The Walt Disney Company, where he spent more than a decade in consumer products.

“Josh is an exceptional and talented leader and widely regarded as one of the most accomplished executives in consumer products. His experience at Disney overseeing the world’s largest entertainment-related consumer products business will be invaluable as we start the next chapter of our growth strategy at Mattel,” said Dickson. “There is incredible potential to be unlocked in our treasure trove of IP under his leadership and across our portfolio of iconic brands.”

At 77 years old, Mattel has only just begun meaningfully mining its stables of games and characters for content, taking on the role of producers. “Barbie,” “Masters of the Universe,” “Hot Wheels,” the Magic 8 Ball and pint-sized adventurer Polly Pocket are all forthcoming feature films based on the company’s toys. With content development now coming from inside the house under movie executive Robbie Brenner, a role like Silverman’s will be crucial in leveraging Mattel’s IP to move product.

At Disney, Silverman was executive vice president of global third-party commercialization. In this capacity, he led development on strategic marketing and product partnerships for Disney’s brands and characters. A $37.5 billion retail business in 2011, the division grew to $54 billion in sales by 2021.

Silverman cut his teeth at Marvel Entertainment, where he started in 2001 as a corporate attorney in the business and legal affairs group. In 2008, he was promoted to senior vice president of global business development and licensing operations. In this role, he was responsible for structuring strategic partnerships and licenses.

“I have long admired Mattel’s brands, mission, and purpose, both as an entertainment company partner and as a father and fan,” Silverman added. “Given the strength of its portfolio, I believe there is tremendous commercial opportunity ahead for Mattel. I am thrilled to join this world-class leadership team at such an exciting time in Mattel’s growth as an IP-driven, high-performing toy company.”

As of late 2020, the consumer product business was a $125 billion enterprise for Hollywood — one not immune to the economic devastation of COVID-19 and subsequent supply chain issues.

Mattel Giving Toys a Second, Third and Fourth Life

Into the trash — that’s too often the fate for toys that have been well-used and outgrown or chewed up by pets and broken apart. Dolls, for example, can be too complicated for local recycling facilities to process, which is why toy companies like Hasbro and Mattel have paired up with TerraCycle, a company that aims to “recycle the unrecyclable.”

One year after Mattel launched its PlayBack program, Fisher-Price, one of the corporation’s many brands, has signed on, joining the likes of Barbie, Mega and Matchbox. This means children and parents are able to send back Barbie Dreamhouses, colorful Mega Bloks and now Thomas toy engines for recycling – any product that isn’t electric. The process is simple: toy owners can box up their playthings, print a prepaid label and send their package to Mattel. The company says it will recycle what it can into new toys. Other materials will be downcycled or converted into energy.

We’ve come a long way from the 1940s, when Fisher-Price started the trend of offering entirely plastic products. The novelty of plastic has worn off, though the durability and versatility continue to be hard to beat by metals, rubber or other materials. Still, the environmental issues are increasingly hard to ignore. An estimate from 2021 put plastic production en route to exceed the amount of greenhouse gases that coal-fired power plants produce before the turn of the new decade. And the pollution caused by discarded plastic products finding their way into streams, rivers and larger bodies of water is a growing problem that has already reached 14 million tons a year

PlayBack provides an opportunity for bottom line benefits

Mattel’s growing PlayBack initiative isn’t just a boon to the environment. It also provides the corporation with an opportunity for innovation and a source of second-hand material. As Pamela Gill-Alabaster, Mattel’s senior vice president and global head of sustainability and social impact, describes in a press statement, “The Mattel PlayBack program has been eagerly received by consumers and has provided tremendous learning specific to the durability and disassembly of our products, which will aid in the future design of products made for the circular economy. We are also exploring new technologies in plastic processing and recycling, with our longer-term goal to use materials collected through Mattel PlayBack in future toy production.”

The initiative aligns with Mattel’s sustainability goals, specifically a 2030 aim for completely recycled, recyclable or bio-based plastics in products and packaging. It also keeps the multinational in line with customer preferences. A recent study commissioned by The Toy Association found that the sustainability of toys is important to over three-quarters of parents

The future of sustainable toys

Initiatives like Terracycle are making it possible to transform industries that are heavily dependent on plastics. In a post about its process, the Trenton, N.J.-based company writes one of the most hopeful statements an environmentalist could read, “The good news is that most rubbish is technically recyclable.” Terracycle even accepts those materials that seem the least redeemable, from the red wax encasing Babybel cheeses to extinguished cigarettes.

But in a world where consumers are increasingly interested in decreasing their waste footprint, recycling may not be the be-all and end-all.

When Steve Rho, the CEO of sustainability-minded Big Future Toys, spoke with HuffPost, his recommendation to families was to rethink consumption habits. After all, while companies like Mattel are leading the way to a circular economy, the toy shelves in big-box stores are still saturated with virgin and non-recyclable plastics.

“This will sound crazy coming from a toy company ― maybe you don’t buy a toy, maybe you substitute an experience, a trip to the zoo or to a great show,” Rho said. “It reduces clutter in your home and you’re not using so many natural resources.”

Mattel Includes Fisher-Price Toys Into Mattel PlayBack Program To Boost Recycling Efforts

Mattel, Inc. (MAT), a toy maker and entertainment firm, said on Tuesday that it has expanded its Mattel PlayBack program to include Fisher-Price toys as part of its efforts to boost recycling of used toys or their materials.

The initiative is designed to recover and reuse materials from old Mattel toys in future Mattel products, that allows the firm to keep the used materials out of landfills.

In addition, the program also supports Mattel’s goal to achieve 100 percent recycled, recyclable, or bio-based plastic materials in its products and packaging by 2030.

With this move, Fisher-Price joins Barbie, MEGA, and Matchbox brands in the toy take-back initiative.

Last year, the toy maker had launched this recycling initiative in the U.S., Canada, France, Germany, and the U.K.

Mattel debuts their first transgender Barbie

Mattel has collaborated with actress Laverne Cox to release the first transgender Barbie doll in their collection.

The Street:

In other Mattel news, the company recently introduced a Barbie in the likeness of the actress, educator and LGBTQ+ activist Laverne Cox. This is the company’s first transgender Barbie, and Cox was reportedly “very involved” in every step of the design process, according to People.

“I can’t believe it. I love her outfit,” Cox told People. “What excites me most about her being out in the world is that trans young people can see her and maybe get to purchase her and play with her, and know that there’s a Barbie made by Mattel, for the first time, in the likeness of a trans person.”

Mattel:

As a four-time Emmy-nominated actress, Emmy-winning producer, and the first transgender woman of color to have a leading role on a scripted TV show, Laverne Cox uses her voice to amplify the message of moving beyond societal expectations to live more authentically. She wears a triple-threat original design, featuring a deep red tulle gown gracefully draped over a dazzling, silver metallic bodysuit. Her hair is swept into glamorous Hollywood waves while dramatic makeup completes her look.

Trixie Mattel & Shakey Graves Perform ‘This Town’ on ‘Jimmy Kimmel’ – Billboard

Between running a makeup company, owning a motel and gay bar, writing best-selling books, releasing original albums, and embarking on world tours, Trixie Mattel is a very busy drag queen. On the latest episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Mattel and fellow singer-songwriter Shakey Graves appeared to perform their song “This Town,” off of Mattel’s upcoming double LP, The Blonde & Pink Albums. Mattel, wearing a pink, bedazzled mermaid-cut dress and plucking away at a pink guitar, offered up the bittersweet stylings of the song, singing plaintively about her Wisconsin hometown, before Graves jumped in to assist.

You either work the land or the fiberglass plant in town,” Mattel sang over a shuffling country beat. “You maybe got out or you never did settle down.”

The new performance comes amidst a flurry of activity for the drag star. Along with promoting and releasing her new album this summer, Mattel is set to star in a new home makeover show on Discovery+ titled Trixie Motelfollowing the drag star as she buys and renovates her own kitschy motel in Palm Springs, with the help of a few celebrity guests along the way. The series will premiere on the streaming platform this Friday, June 3.

This also isn’t the first time in the last few weeks that Kimmel has seen drag superstars join him on his show. Last week, RuPaul herself appeared on the show to promote RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 7, and to chat with the host about everything from actual drag racing to a Bea Arthur pool party.

Trixie Mattel Teams With Shakey Graves for ‘This Town’ on ‘Kimmel’

Trixie Mattel tapped Austin-based singer-songwriter Shakey Graves for a performance of “This Town” on Jimmy Kimmel LiveTuesday.

Decked out in vintage-inspired Western gear, Mattel and Co. channeled Grand Ole Opry nostalgia for the rendition of the track from the RuPaul’s Drag Race star’s forthcoming double LP, The Blonde & Pink Albums.

The collaboration between Mattel and Graves — which Rolling Stone called “purely bittersweet” and “unsentimental” — served as the second single from The Blonde & Pink Albums. It was followed by the semi-biographical ode to Loretta Lynn, “C’mon Loretta.”

The Blonde & Pink Albums are due out June 24 — but Mattel will also spend the month busy promoting her new reality show Trixie Motel, premiering June 3 on Discovery+. The series follows Mattel and her partner as they renovate a vintage motel in Palm Springs.

‘Are you My Soul Mate?’ The Definitive Guide to Find Out – World News Report

A BOOK THAT ANSWERS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTIONS”

— June Marshall

MADISON, ALABAMA, UNITED STATES, May 29, 2022 /EINPresswire.com/ — Fifty percent of first marriages and sixty percent of second marriages end in separation and divorce in the US. These love relationships fail because they are not based on the Soul, but on fear, lack, the ticking clock, loneliness, or just plain lust.

Discover if your Loved One is also your Soul Mate.

The author, June Marshall, takes on the challenge to change this dismal state of affairs with her book. For more than three decades she has taught classes on Soul Mates and their relationship to our past lives. One of her definitions of a Soul Mate is that eternal Souls recognize each other from other lifetimes – so as you recognize your Soul Mate, it’s unmistakable. You are drawing on subconscious memories of shared lives and deep connections.

Her answer to the question: ‘Are You My Soul Mate?’ is the culmination of her decades long spiritual search, including truly personal experiences with her two Soul Mates in this lifetime. By the time you are finished with this book, you will have no doubt either about whether the people you have loved and who have loved you are the companions of your Soul. For just as there are underlying spiritual laws of the Universe, there are also laws that govern Soul Mate encounters.

The author explores Soul Mating in a new, completely inclusive way between ourselves, our children, our friends, and even our animals. She defines and emphasizes throughout the book what the Soul is and offers many examples of love relationships, even including the ones which are not sexual in nature.

June Marshall also wrote two other books: The Dirty Seven: Ladies Beware and Booby Trapped: Men Beware! In her third book here, she draws on her lifelong experience and interpretive skills to discuss a much more serious subject: The failure of love itself, if it is not based on Soul.

Are You My Soul Mate? is available in print, Kindle ebook, and Audible audiobook formats on Amazon and soon on other platforms.
